Balayage and highlights create dimension in different ways — our Chelsea colourists help you choose.

"Should I have balayage or highlights?" is one of the most common questions we hear at TOQQA Hair Salon on King's Road, Chelsea. Both techniques add dimension, brightness and movement to your hair — but they are created very differently and suit different lifestyles. In this guide, our Creative Director Akif Aytekin explains exactly how they compare, so you can walk into your next appointment knowing precisely what you want.

What Is Balayage?

Balayage is a freehand technique where colour is hand-painted onto the surface of the hair, concentrated towards the mid-lengths and ends. Because it is swept on by eye rather than saturated from the root, it creates a soft, natural, sun-kissed effect with seamless regrowth. There is no harsh line as your hair grows, which is why our balayage clients in Chelsea often stretch six to twelve weeks between visits.

Balayage at a glance

  • Look: Soft, blended, natural and lived-in
  • Maintenance: Low — grows out gracefully with no obvious line
  • Best for: Those who want a relaxed, effortless finish and fewer salon visits

What Are Highlights?

Traditional highlights are created by weaving fine sections of hair and wrapping them in foils, taking the colour all the way from root to tip. This delivers a more uniform, all-over brightness and is unrivalled for maximum lift — ideal if you want a noticeably lighter, brighter result or precise, even coverage throughout.

Highlights at a glance

  • Look: Bright, uniform and high-impact
  • Maintenance: Higher — regrowth shows at the root, so touch-ups every six to eight weeks keep it crisp
  • Best for: Those who love a consistently bright, polished finish from root to end

Balayage vs Highlights: The Key Differences

The simplest way to think about it is placement and finish. Balayage is painted onto the surface for a graduated, natural blend; highlights are foiled from the root for an even, all-over lift. Balayage tends to be lower maintenance, while highlights give you brighter, more uniform colour but ask for more frequent upkeep.

Cost reflects this too. Because balayage is designed to grow out softly, it can be more economical over a year despite a higher single-session price. Highlights cost less to refresh individually but are visited more often.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose balayage if you want a natural, low-maintenance look that grows out beautifully and frames the face. Choose highlights if you want maximum brightness, even coverage and a polished, uniform finish. Many of our Chelsea clients actually enjoy a combination — foiled highlights around the face for brightness, with hand-painted balayage through the lengths for depth and movement.

The honest answer is that the right choice depends on your hair's current condition, your natural base, your lifestyle and how often you can realistically visit the salon. That is exactly what we assess during a complimentary colour consultation.
